When I started writing in March 2011, I was a new homeowner. At the advanced age of ninety-five, my first home in its then run-down state illustrated exhaustion and neglect. While so many continue to associate these same characteristics with Anacostia, Anacostia is none other than home for me. As the neighborhood I proudly call my own changes, I hope I can be a positive presence in discussions about gentrification, economic development, and community.
